Emergency Aid for Earthquake Victims in Myanmar
Update from 15 April 2025

Emergency relief is getting underway

The earthquake also caused devastating damage in Shan State, where SWISSAID is active. The SWISSAID team on the ground, together with local partner organisations, is ensuring that the people most affected receive support. After an initial needs assessment, aid is being continuously expanded.

A terrible earthquake devastated Myanmar on 28 March 2025. The 7.7-magnitude quake killed over 3,500 people and injured more than 4,000. Important infrastructure such as houses, roads and bridges were destroyed. There is a lack of food, clean drinking water and safe shelter. Countless people have been torn out of their familiar lives from one moment to the next. “I have lost my house and I am devastated,” said a woman just a stone’s throw from Inle Lake in Nyaung Shwe.

Myanmar, which has been hit by several crises in recent years, is now facing a humanitarian disaster. In view of this situation and with more than thirty years of experience in the country, SWISSAID has quickly adapted its programme and set up an emergency aid programme that will initially be implemented in Shan State.

The sum of CHF 500,000 is intended to enable victims to obtain basic foodstuffs such as rice, oil, salt and beans or eggs and instant noodles, as well as kitchen utensils. SWISSAID is also ensuring that they can obtain the necessary materials to repair their homes, such as bamboo for building, tarpaulins, nails and ropes.

Network of partners

“The earthquake has caused immense damage and affected countless lives. Our team and our local partners are now providing emergency humanitarian aid,” reports Claire Light, SWISSAID programme manager for Myanmar.

SWISSAID has an extensive network of local partners. Thanks to their experience and these partnerships, our organisation is able to offer the people affected targeted and effective assistance. This means that the project can be quickly and efficiently adapted to the needs of a severely affected population.
