A devastating humanitarian disaster has just struck several regions of Southeast Asia, with Myanmar on the front line. A 7.7 magnitude earthquake has plunged the country into horror. Thousands of buildings lie in ruins, roads have been destroyed, and hospitals are overwhelmed. A state of emergency has been declared in six regions. «The earthquake has caused immense devastation and affected countless lives. Our team and local partners remain committed to delivering urgent humanitarian assistance», emphasises Claire Light, SWISSAID programme manager for Myanmar.

SWISSAID has been present in the country since 1992 and is initially releasing emergency aid of 500,000 Swiss francs to support affected communities in Shan State and in other affected regions. This package will provide necessities to a weakened and shocked population: tents, kitchen kits, blankets and other non-food items are planned.

Network of partners.
SWISSAID has a large network of local partners with whom it is actively collaborating on the implementation and deployment of this emergency aid. This allows us to adapt quickly and effectively to their needs.
