Since 2023, a brutal war between the army and militias in Sudan has forced millions of people to flee. In recent weeks, the situation has further escalated. The United Nations report targeted attacks on civilians and see no end to the violence.

Those who can, flee. Many seek refuge in neighboring Chad. SWISSAID is providing urgently needed emergency aid in the Farchana refugee camp.

The suffering is unimaginably great. SWISSAID is on the ground, fighting tirelessly for the survival of every single person. Please support our vital efforts with a donation. Your help supports displaced families and saves lives. Thank you very much!

How critical is the situation on the ground?

It is the largest and fastest growing displacement crisis of our time: the terrible civil war in Sudan has already claimed thousands of civilian lives and forced over 12 million people to flee their homes.

1 million people – mainly women and children – have fled to Chad. Around 47000 found shelter in Farchana, one of the largest refugee camps in eastern Chad.

Chad, one of the poorest countries in the world, can hardly cope with this refugee crisis. This year alone, another 200,000 people have fled to Chad. The great need for basic foodstuffs and clean water far exceeds the available resources.

The humanitarian situation on the ground is catastrophic: there is a lack of food, water and medical care. Not only the refugees, but also the local population is suffering from hunger.

Hadje, 55, had to flee Darfur with her family

“My husband and I struggled through the desert for days with our five children and hardly had any water. We made it to Farchana with the last of our strength.”

Support Farchana Emergency Relief Efforts

Over a million people have already fled to Chad to escape the war in Sudan - which is almost impossible for one of the poorest countries in the world to cope with. There is a lack of basic food and water. Thank you for your valuable donation!

How does SWISSAID help on the ground?

The influx of people is so great that resources in Farchana are becoming scarcer with each passing day. Unaccompanied children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with disabilities and the elderly are particularly at risk. They are dependent on our emergency aid.

  • We are providing 3,000 families with essential staple foods for nine months.
  • To ensure a sustainable water supply, we are rehabilitating five existing water points and constructing five new wells. This will give 5,000 people access to clean drinking water and prevent the spread of deadly diseases such as typhoid and cholera.

Thanks to many years of crisis experience and a strong network of local partners, SWISSAID can help quickly. For this to succeed, we urgently need your support.

Emergency Aid Campaign: Over One Million Swiss Francs Needed

The emergency aid is running outside the planned budget. By the end of the year, we need to raise over one million Swiss francs for the people in Farchana. Our donation barometer reflects all contributions received – whether from institutions, foundations, the Swiss Solidarity – or from you, dear donor. Every donation saves lives!
